Youth-to-youth network

Project is completed

CLAVIS young-to-young network is a project under CLAVIS language & competence.

The project is for young people, respectively. young students and course participants with a refugee background in the youth department, who together create an intercultural youth network.

The project is based on the young-to-young approach, where young students are paired with young people with a refugee background. Together, they can create the basis for a good youth life in Denmark. This happens through mentor-mentee courses as well as through networking events, where mentors and mentees learn from each other and create a social network.

The project places great emphasis on the young people creating an intercultural community and developing together, learning from each other, and that empowerment and equality are important values.

Do you want to be a mentor?

Become a mentor

CLAVIS youth-to-youth network

– a new network for young people in Elsinore and Roskilde.

Are you 18+, a student and live in Roskilde, Helsingør, Fredensborg or Hørsholm municipality? Then you can now apply to become part of a new intercultural youth-to-youth network in Roskilde or Helsingør. You will be a mentor for a mentee and part of a youth network for young students and newly arrived young people with a refugee background. In the network there will be professional and social theme events.

Mentor

You want to play an important and active role in the integration and welcome of your mentee in your local area. This could be participating in leisure activities, social events, sports, workshops – or whatever you can think of together.

You are part of a one-to-one mentor-mentee program with a lot of responsibility. In return, you get a unique chance to make a difference for a young mentee and learn about another culture.

You will take a mentor training over 4 weekday evenings and continuously exchange experiences with other mentors.

Mentees

The young people are between 16 and 25 years old and come primarily from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Eritrea.
They attend CLAVIS, where they are taught Danish, math, English and IT.
They have started a new life and a new education and dream of making Danish friends and a youth network in Denmark.

Mentor – mentee matched

The project has assigned project coordinators who will match mentors and mentees based on age, gender, education and interests and facilitate the training and program.

How to sign up

About the mentoring program

In spring 2018, mentors from the educational institutions in Roskilde and Helsingør will be recruited for the two youth networks. The students who are admitted to the program will go through this course in 2018.

  1. Mentor training over 2 weekday evenings
The first part of the mentor training takes place over 2 weekday evenings. Here, the future mentor is given tools to use in the mentor role, an introduction to the target group and training in navigating cultural encounters. This part of the training is 8 lessons.
  2. Mentor and mentee are matched
The second part is a one-month process where the mentor and mentee are matched and start their program. The project coordinator supervises the first meeting and makes sure that it is a good match, and guides the mentor and mentee in how the program can start and proceed. We expect the mentor and mentee to meet approximately once a week on a day and time of their choice. This could be going to football, piano, a drawing workshop, having dinner together or going to a café with girlfriends. Or whatever you think would be fun.

There will also be a professional and social event where all mentors and mentees will have the opportunity to get to know each other and start networking. We expect to hold these events every 2 months.

  3. Mentor training over two weekday evenings
The third part of the training takes place over two weekday evenings, where the mentors exchange experience and spar with each other. There will be presentations regarding the wishes of the mentors, e.g. “Communication in practice” and additional information about selected countries that the mentors need to know about. In addition, together with the project coordinator, they plan future themes for social and professional networking events. This part of the training consists of 8 lessons.
  4. Mentor-mentee course
For the next approximately 6 months, the one-to-one mentor-mentee courses will be run with parallel professional and social networking activities in the youth network.

About once a month, the mentors meet with the project coordinator, and evaluate and spar with each other about the progress with their mentees. This is also included as part of the mentor training.

  5. Completion of the mentor training
After approx. After 6 months, the mentors receive a certificate of completed mentoring training as well as a volunteer certificate, but hopefully the mentor-mentee courses will continue.

Practical information:

The mentor training starts with 5-8 registrations and will typically be one evening a week for approx. 2.5 hours.

If you are interested in becoming a youth mentor in the CLAVIS youth-to-youth network in Elsinore or Roskilde, contact the project coordinator in Elsinore or Roskilde and find out when the next information evening is.

We do this
Denmark trip – Know your new home country

Part of the youth-to-youth network is also the Denmark trip – Know your new home country, which aims to help students in the youth departments in Roskilde and Helsingør improve their Danish and get to know Denmark and Danes better. In this way, the Denmark tours can contribute to integration, active citizenship and intercultural coexistence for young people aged 15-25 with a refugee background.

In November 2017, Elsinore’s youth department went on a Denmark trip, and in May 2018, Roskilde’s youth department went.

On the Denmark tours we visit museums, go on city walks, to communal dining and networking events with young Danes, on company visits and visit historical and cultural sites, and through these experiences the young people will get to know Denmark and Danes better.

Students visit cities and places such as Danfoss in Sønderborg, Institut for (X) in Aarhus, Vesterhavet, Højer Sluse, H. C. Andersens Hus in Odense and participate in communal dining in e.g. Absalon CPH and meet young Danes at e.g. DFUNK events in Aarhus and Copenhagen.

Supported by

We are financially supported by the National Board of Social Services and have received a grant from Roskilde Festival. We collaborate with local educational institutions and the young people’s municipalities of residence.

The project takes place in the youth departments under CLAVIS in Helsingør and Roskilde.
